Child's Room Project

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Little Bear has flown through the sky and clouds, has traveled the world, and even went to the moon, and this was all possible with his imagination. Anything is possible with your imagination. For the twin boys I wanted to design a room that encourages and allows them to think creatively and use their imagination with no limits. It is a place where they can be themselves and go away.

Different sections of of the rooms portray different environments to make them feel as if they are in another place when they are at these areas. The study and play area is near the window which creates a more open space. The desks and the shelves at the south wall are all built of wood to make it seem as if they are on a ship, looking onward out of the window. The carpet was picked out to represent water. The east and west walls have a painted horizon. The closet has a leaf patterned wall covering to represent land, and the loft represents flight and freedom. White boards are also implemented so they can create their own environment.




CONCEPT MODEL

The concept model was inspired by Little Bear's story of flying to the moon like a shooting star. I pulled colors from the book and abstracted the idea of imagination. Like Little Bear, once imagination is used, one can instantly be in another place; arriving at that moment and leaving realty in a flash.




STUDY MODEL

This model was a little difficult to build because it was so tiny; the measurements are a little off, but it is a good way to visualize the space.





OVERVIEW

This project felt really rushed since we only had a week from start to finish. It was supposed to be a rough project but I tend to over think things and it took longer than it should have. I wish I did not take so long refining the concept and instead just went with it. I was hesitant to use such a childish or dreamland approach because the room design is intended for boys from the age five until they get older at the age of twelve. I decided to just stop over-analyzing and just go with it.
